Since 2022, I've been based in several teams within the Ministry for Housing, Communities & Local Government, ranging from place-based spatial insights to advanced analytics and AI.
I've largely focused on innovative geospatial projects, such as utilising geospatial embeddings and developing performant mapping tools.
Some recent work includes running geospatial foundation models at scale on Databricks, working with Google Deepmind's AlphaEarth Foundations embeddings, visualising predictions of brownfield land, and an app for exploring high resolution aerial imagery from Bluesky International Ltd .
I've developed reusable tools such as a Python & uv cookiecutter template used to reduce technical debt.
I've also contributed to various ELT pipelines and dashboards used across the department (even by a former Deputy Prime Minister!).
Previously, I was a:
- Spatial Analyst @ Defra prototyping geospatial Spark workflows to quantify biodiversity indicators for Environment Land Management Schemes across England.
- Marine Mapping Scientist @ JNCC primarily maintaining the EMODnet Seabed Habitats spatial data infrastructure (PostGIS, GeoServer, OpenLayers). I also produced, collated and published various domestic and international data products such as UKASH, OSPAR, Annex I , marine habitat suitability models.
I've also worked on a couple projects for personal learning and development purposes:
map-uk: open-source Python package to enable non-technical users to create interactive maps of data linked to UK statistical and administrative geographies.- Exploring eoAPI: extracted DevelopmentSeed's eoAPI Maxar demos when I first started working with remote sensing data. Developed a couple proof of concept Jupyter notebooks for visualising remote Maxar Open Data locally.
